Harper's Young People is an illustrated weekly publication for children that includes short stories, tales from history, natural history, poetry, puzzles, and other fun. This 42nd issue of the serial was published on August 17th, 1880. In this issue, "The Moral Pirates" go diving to recover lost gear and later confront a huge nighttime intruder in camp; a harrowing account is given of a legendary and bloody conflict between Indians and colonialists in "Old Times in the Colonies"; and the story of "The Roverings at Coney Island" tells the amusing tale of a family's attempted daytrip to the beach that results in misadventure and a missed lunch. Other highlights of this issue include detailed instructions on how to build a naturally balanced habitat for ocean creatures in "A Salt-Water Aquarium"; the story of "Little Madge," the orphaned matchgirl whose curiosity and integrity change her destiny; a guide for constructing a simple weather-predicting tool in "Hygrometer, and How to Make Them"; and, how to build your own miniature version of "The Manes Life-Boat," suitable for the rescue of your pet bugs (illustrations are available in the Project Gutenberg ebook).
