Elias Lönnrot
Elias Lönnrot was a Finnish physician, philologist, and folklorist, best known for his pivotal role in compiling and publishing the "Kalevala," the national epic of Finland. Born on April 9, 1802, in Sammatti, Lönnrot's passion for language and culture drove him to travel extensively throughout Finland and Karelia, collecting folk poems and stories that would later form the backbone of the "Kalevala." His meticulous work not only preserved Finnish oral traditions but also ignited a sense of national identity among Finns during a time of growing nationalism in the 19th century.
