Melis Stoke
Melis Stoke was a Middle Dutch writer active around the turn of the fourteenth century. Little is securely known about his life, but he is associated with the court of the counts of Holland, where written accounts helped preserve the memory of rulers and events. He wrote in the vernacular rather than Latin, placing his work within a growing tradition of Dutch-language literature. His writing also belongs to a time when accounts of a region’s past could serve both as narrative and as a record of political identity.
Stoke is known chiefly for Rijmkroniek van Holland. It traces the history of Holland’s counts and reaches events close to the writer’s own time, making it valuable as a medieval account as well as a work of literature. Its perspective is shaped by its connection to the comital court, so readers encounter the past through the concerns of that political world. The chronicle’s Middle Dutch language offers a direct way into an early stage of Dutch writing. If you’re curious about how medieval writers told the story of a place and its rulers, Stoke is a rewarding author to explore in the app.
