These shows were designed for the entertainment of servicemen and servicewomen overseas during the Second World War and generally were not heard by audiences here in the United States. Guest hosts, such as Lum and Abner and Hopalong Cassidy (Bill Boyd), took song requests from soldiers and played their favorite records.

Occasionally, live bands took over musical performance duties, adding to the variety and enjoyment of the program.
