Disappointing,,,except for Mr.Clifton Fadiman's commentary

Re: An American Tragedy The character development and dialogue were overwhelmed by the intrusive presence of overwrought histrionic - and often too loud - orchestral music. So many times I wanted to hear more exposition of the story lines through dialogue only to have that cut off jarringly by the orchestra. This condensed adaptation of a very long and cumbersome novel was allowed to be dominated not were it should have by the writer of the script but instead by the composer of the music. A bad choice. However, I was much impressed by Mr.Clifton Fadiman's insightful comments during the intermission about Theodore Dreiser's important influence on American literature in the first quarter of the 20th century.
